In 1971, Kay Bruce (now Glynn) graduated from Nishna Valley High School-- a country school in southwestern Iowa.
1979—Kay was inducted into the Iowa Girls High School Track & Field Hall of Fame.
She held the high school long jump state record for over 30 years at 19’2 ½”, and still holds the Iowa district record and the western Iowa record.
She also still holds the state record for the 60 yard dash at 7.0, and this is a discontinued event.
Kay’s events during her high school years were long jump, 100, 200 and 4x100 relay.
As an eighth grader, Kay was the youngest member to ever be accepted for the high school girls Iowa Track Club, and she won the long jump at the national federation meet that year.
After a 30 year abstinence from track & field, Kay returned to the sport at the Iowa Games at the age of 48, and her competitions have taken her from coast to coast. She took up pole vaulting at the age of 50—as well as several other events—and won the national indoor heptathlon that year. She has competed and won many national championship titles in the last 5 years. At the age of 55, at the USATF Masters National Indoor Championships held in Boston, she received gold medals in the pentathlon, long jump, high jump, 60H, and pole vault—breaking her own indoor pole vaulting world record with a height of 2.92 (9’7”). She also placed second in the 60m dash, triple jump, & shot. In 2009, she was named 2008 Co-Female Athlete of the Year by the USATF.

Kay did her first Senior Olympics at the Iowa meet at the age of 51. She competed in 11 events at the 2009 National Senior Olympics Meet at Stanford University (100, 200, PV, LJ, TJ, HJ, javelin, shot, discus, hammer) winning 5 medals. She has participated in the Senior Olympics in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, and Missouri.
Her other lifetime passion has been dancing and performing acrobatics since the age of 4. For over 20 years, she has owned her own studio where she taught various disciplines of dance--such as tap, jazz, ballet, and acrobatics. She won a Ford Mustang at the age of 15 doing a novelty acrobatic routine with chairs. In the last 5 years, this routine has given her spots on such t.v. shows such as The Late Show with David Letterman, The Jimmy Kimmell Show, Oprah, The View (with Barbara Walters), America’s Got Talent , 30 Seconds to Fame, I’ve Got a Secret, and Country Fried Home Videos which also includes a clip of Kay pole vaulting in her backyard pole vaulting pit. Recently, she also made a dream come true. She flew on a trapeze for the first time—at the age of 55!
In the spring of 2009 Kay closed her dance studio, and she and her husband bought a local insurance agency where she is working part-time. Kay is enjoying spending time as a motivational entertainer, and training for track and field at her home in the country where she has a pole vault pit, a high jump pit, hurdles, and an area comprised of a horizontal bar, rings, and trapeze. Also, Kay was featured in the Aug. 2009 issue of A.A.R.P. Magazine.
